Twitter

After a few years away, I recently dusted off my twitter account. I really don’t like the site (something about sharing the same air as literal nazis puts me off my lunch) but it seemed to be the easiest way to find local info/news. Also I admit… it’s been lonely. We’re still isolating (and I’m even more committed to it than ever since getting covid and still recovering), but I was starting to feel a little… feral. It’d be nice to socialize virtually.

Since Elon acquired the company, there’s been a mass exodus from the site. I don’t blame them, but it’s interesting (or something). The rampant nazis and lack of moderation wasn’t enough to push people away en masse. Originally I left because I was getting more negative and hate interactions than actual pals and chummery. On my recent return, I’ve had a few folks (all the best ones) interacting, but not many. Not that I expected anyone to really care or even notice. But still.

I do hope the folks who stay manage to devalue twitter for its new daddy. I probably won’t go anywhere, but I also don’t expect to get comfortable. It’s probably only a matter of time before Elon starts requiring payment to use the site, or some kind of modified LinkedIn model (payment to @ people or payment to thread your own tweets or something).

I’ve been on Twitter since its earliest days, and I’m okay with a silo going down. But I wish capitalism and modern society weren’t so hellbent on breaking down the bridges people have cobbled together to try and survive this dystopia.
